If only we could choose our kids’ role models….
This Sunday night, we’ll get a pretty accurate glimpse of our teens’ role models. Andy Samberg. Lil Wayne. Eminem. Put the kids to bed…it’s time for the annual MTV Movie Awards.
The 2009 MTV Movie Awards
Broadcasting live from Los Angeles on May 31st at 9:00pm (EST), the MTV Movie Awards will bring in millions of young viewers from all across the country (and world). Teenagers will not only tune in to see the on-stage antics of A-List celebrities and the live performances of today’s biggest stars, but also to see who wins the Golden Popcorn…the “award” given to winners for categories such as “Best Kiss,” “Best Villain,” and “Best Movie,” to name a few.
With all the movie stars and music icons that will hit the stage this year, along with the fact that viewers actually get to select the winners, teenagers will have tons of reasons to watch this year. And that means you probably have a good reason to watch, as well.
Big Names…As Usual
MTV is bringing out the big guns this year. Andy Samberg, one of Gen Y’s favorite personas from Saturday Night Live, will be hosting the event. Samberg is the guy who brought us those wonderful toe-tappin’ tunes like “D–k in a Box” and “J–z in My Pants,” (which was one of the top music videoson iTunes when it was released), and the most recent digital short featuring Justin Timberlake which has the chorus, “We should f*** each other’s mother.”
But Samberg won’t be the only star on stage. He’ll be surrounded by other big names who’ll function as presenters throughout the evening. Lil Wayne (winner of Best Hip Hop video from 2008 VMA’s), Will Ferrell (Talladega Nights), Denzel Washington, Cameron Diaz, Ryan Reynolds, Vanessa Hudgens, Jonah Hill, Sandra Bullock, Dwayne Johnson (a.k.a. The Rock), and Channing Tatum (Star Trek) are just a few of the celebs that will grab the mic to pass out the popcorn.
Just to make sure young viewers tune in, leading cast members of the Twilight series are slated to unveil an exclusive “never-before-seen” clip from the upcoming New Moon movie. It’s sure to be huge! Plus, the latest news is that fans of Transformers II: Revenge of the Fallen and fans of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will get to see exclusive clips of these movies, too.
Capping it all off are live performances by some of the hottest musicians…after all, it is “MUSIC” TV, right? (Yeah, right.) Eminem will crank out the newest tune from his Relapse album, while Kings of Leon also get a chance to rock the crowd.
Yep…MTV knows how to draw in a crowd. They basically have every corner of pop culture covered.

Unforgettable Moments…That You Wish You Could Forget
The MTV Movie Awards has been known to produce moments of television that entertain teenagers while shocking parents and youth workers at the same time. For instance, last year’s spectacles included a naked Rainn Wilson (The Office) chatting with – and grossing out – hottie Megan Fox (Transformers), an over-the-top weed commercial by Seth Rogen and James Franco (Pineapple Express), and a very racy Wayne’s World Top 10 by host Mike Myers along with his buddy Dana Carvey. You can read about all of the garbage MTV crammed into last year’s show in our review.
2008 wasn’t the first time MTV offended with their annual Movie Awards; there was plenty to be annoyed with the year before that, as well. Jonathan harps on just the first ten minutes of the 2007 MTV Movie Awards show in this article.
What’s in store for this year? Who knows? The only prediction I am willing to make is that the show will draw in several million teenage viewers. So, if you want to know what teenagers are watching these days and who they’re listening to, say a prayer, and turn on MTV this Sunday night. Then, check back in with TheSource4YM.com on Monday, June 1st for our take – and talking points – on the show that’s anticipated around the world.
