TOPICAL DISCUSSIONS

Halo 3
Spiritual Warfare

Main Point of Discussion: The Bible teaches that Christians are in a spiritual battle with Satan and his forces, therefore we must engage in the fight with our spiritual weapons.

Vital Info Before You Get Started: (The following should help you contextualize this very popular issue so you can have a great discussion about it with your kids.)

  • Halo 3 is the final video game installment in the Halo series—basically about saving the planet from an invading alien force.

  • First-day sales of Halo 3 reached $170 million in the U.S., setting a record for highest gross of an entertainment product within 24 hours of its release. Worldwide more than $300 million worth were sold in the first week. More than 10 million copies of Halo 3 have been sold to date.

  • At THE SOURCE FOR YOUTH MINISTRY we like to use pop culture references to start biblical conversation (just like the Apostle Paul used culture to start conversations about Jesus in Acts 17). This promo video might be a good discussion starter in some circles. Use your discernment. If you want, you can use a different clip from the ‘Museum’ series.

  • Above all, don’t appear as if you have a “canned” discussion in your head and rattle off questions like a teacher giving a pop quiz—your kids get enough of that in school. This is a guide, primarily—not a verbatim script. Just familiarize yourself with the content here and start a conversation in the most natural, unforced way you know how.

Introducing the Video:
Halo 3 had several promo videos that give away the theme, and one in particular really ties in to a spiritual truth. Let’s watch it and see if you can catch it.

Ask your church’s tech person to help you show the promo video found at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zq2akuhFaB0

Three Simple Questions (with Answers You May Be Looking for):
Q: What’s going on in this video?
A: A former soldier—now an old man—recounts a big battle and how his “master chief” gave his unit hope because he was “still in the fight.” It ends with one word: Believe.

Q: How do you suppose we—as serious Christ-followers—should react to this video?
A: It should remind us that our “master chief”—Jesus—goes before us in the battle against Satan. In fact, we should have unshakable hope because Jesus already won that battle!

Q: How can we move from healthy, Bible-based opinions about this video to actually living out those opinions?
A: When we’re in the thick of the fight, we need to first recognize who our enemy is: “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12) Then we must remember who empowers us to withstand the forces that want to do us in…and then act on that truth: “Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.” (Ephesians 6:13)

Where to Take It from Here:
Wherever it feels natural. If these questions lead to a longer discussion on the topic, wonderful! (There’s a guide just after this paragraph that helps you do just that.) If your kids are barely uttering grunts, don’t get discouraged—the next time it feels right, keep engaging them.

For Deeper Discussion: (If your kids seem into diving in deeper, the following discussion guide can help take you there.)

Transitional Statement:

Talk to the group about their experiences and thoughts about the Halo series and what’s behind its widespread popularity.

More Discussion Questions:

  1. HAVE ALL YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS ANSWER: Before we begin, let’s go around and talk about our favorite video games and why we like them. I’ll start…

  2. ASK A FEW FAMILY MEMBERS: Does this promo make you want to play Halo 3? Why or why not?

  3. Say Something Like:
Of course, Halo 3 is just a game. We don’t really have an invading alien force on our planet with the goal of eliminating human vermin, right? Well, maybe not in a physical sense, but there’s a Halo 3 battle going on in the spiritual world that’s very real. But don’t take my word for it- take God’s Word for it.

Read the following passages from the Bible:

      Luke 10:18
Jesus replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven”

      John 10:10
The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy

    Say Something Like:
Jesus refers to a time in the past when Satan was kicked out of heaven like a bolt of lightning. While Bible teachers differ on why Satan was dishonorably discharged, we all can agree that Satan has declared war on humanity.

  4. ASK ONE FAMILY MEMBER: How is Satan’s war like an alien invasion force?

  5. ASK A FEW FAMILY MEMBERS: How does Satan ‘steal, kill, and destroy’?

  6. ASK A FEW FAMILY MEMBERS: Do you think Satan attacks Christians more often than non-Christians? Why or why not?

  7. Say Something Like:
Make no mistake, the dark forces of the spiritual world have marked you for destruction- but the good news is this: we don’t have to stand by and take it.

Read the following passages from the Bible:

      2 Corinthians 10: 3-5 (NLT)
We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

      Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword.

      I Thessalonians 5:17
      pray continually

    Say Something Like:
The word of God and prayer are the ‘mighty weapons’ that Paul is talking about in the first passage we read. We are supposed to use them not only for our own spiritual growth and walk with Christ, but also to fight the good fight against Satan.

  8. ASK ONE FAMILY MEMBER: What does it mean to ‘knock down strongholds of human reasoning’?

  9. ASK ONE FAMILY MEMBER: What does ‘destroying false arguments’ look like?

  10. HAVE ALL YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS ANSWER: How can we balance fighting against false worldviews and still be loving and compassionate toward others?

Wrap Up:
As I mentioned earlier, Halo 3’s main character has what seems to be a reference to Christ- who is the Savior of the world. In the game, you get behind Master Chief and fight against the enemy. In real life, we are called to get behind Jesus Christ and fight against what the enemy is trying to accomplish through false reasoning and destructive worldviews. I want to give you a chance to ‘enlist’ in this cause tonight so we can start making a difference from tomorrow on.

If you don’t know how to do this… then I challenge you to follow the advice of the Apostle Paul in that last verse we read. “Pray continually.” Think for a second: How much time have you spent in the last week just sitting down and praying, asking God to help you as you face false reasoning and destructive worldviews? How many times have you prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart. See if there be any sinful way in me”?

Give your family members a chance to reflect and pray in silence for a few minutes, making a commitment to Christ to take up the weapons of God’s word and prayer and fight against the plans of Satan in their lives and schools.

Close in Prayer
